Gaua is known as the adventure island in Torba Province and for good reason.
Hiking to Lake Letas and Mt. Garet are the main draw cards for tourists visiting Gaua who are looking for a rewarding challenge. Hiking, canoeing, and active volcanoes – this trek has it all!
Your guide Victor will lead you on the hike at a pace that suits you, with the option to walk over one, two or three days. The trek will take you through some of the most beautiful and remote parts of the country; we highly recommend you bring your camera with spare batteries, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, insect repellent, water bottle, wet weather gear and a small first aid kit.
This is a challenging trek - even walking at a more leisurely pace, and it is recommended that it is only undertaken by those who have a high level of fitness and stamina or have experience hiking in similar (tropical) conditions. The hike is subject to natural conditions and your safety is our priority. You will be in the safe hands of our accredited tour guides however this adventure is not suitable for children under 10 years of age. Typical tour program:
Option 1 – Full Day Tour – Action Packed!
Early start from your accommodation on the coast, walk through villages, coconut plantations and follow a single track through the bush. After approximately 3 hours walk you will each your first viewpoint (altitude 509m) over the active volcano, Mt. Garet. Then there is an easy going, half hour descent to Lake Letas. After breaking for refreshments, paddle for 45 minutes across the lake by outrigger canoe. On the other side you will begin the steep 45 minute climb to the smoking peak of Mt. Garet from where you will enjoy the amazing panoramic lake view and surrounding tropical jungle.
After the half hour decent from Mt. Garet and and paddle back across the lake you will reach wither Paul or Chief Victor Campsite where lunch will be served. Fresh water prawns are something you don’t want to miss! Once you had regained your energy you will walk back, downhill to your accommodation.
Option 2 – Two Day/One Night Package – Slow Your Roll + Chasing Waterfalls.
This option includes all treks from Option 1 but includes a night camping for those that wish to take a slower pace and spend more time enjoying their surrounds. After the volcano trek (Option 1), set up camp at either Paul or Chief Victor’s camp ground and enjoy a delicious local lunch and cool off with a swim in the lake or try to master the art of the dugout canoe.
Enjoy a local-style BBQ dinner in the evening and drift to sleep to the sounds of the jungle. In the morning after breakfast, you will take to 1.5 hour walk to Siri Waterfall and return to your accommodation on the coast in the afternoon.
Option 3 – Three Day/Two Night Package – Add in the Beach!
This option includes 2 nights of camping. After the volcano trek (Option 1), set up camp at Paul or Chief Victor’s campground and enjoy a delicious local lunch. After lunch walk 1.5 hours through tropical rainforest to Siri Waterfall – the highest waterfall in Vanuatu, and cool of in the fresh water. Once refreshed, you well hike back to the campsite where you will stay the night.
In the morning, after a bush-style breakfast, you will take the 4 hour walk to Tony Paradise Beach where you can swim and snorkel off the beach, have lunch and stay the night. Be lulled to sleep by the gentle waves and wake up with a refreshing swim in the crystal clear water! What better way to end your trek?
From Tony Paradise Beach it is a 40 minute walk back to your accommodation. Tired legs? Boat transfers can also be arranged.
